2. At 6:00pm CST on April 24th we go live on Zoom (code will be sent out via our Remind) and announce a randomly drawn theme and phrase/line that must be a part of your song or monologue. We’ll also post this to social media after the live event so don’t worry if you miss the live announcement.

3. You have 24 hours to write and perform an original monologue or song.

4. You record your original piece and post your recording to YouTube (or send it to us if you don’t know how) making sure it’s public and can be openly shared and viewed by others.

5. You fill out this form with your info and a link to your YouTube video:

https://forms.gle/xyuM7GgEK7kEMwXo7

6. We put your video (and everyone else's) on our public YouTube playlist so you and everyone else can see it and like it, for our fan favorite award.

7. We have our judges (made up of theatre educators & professionals) view all videos and give out additional awards announced via our social media.

Rules & Guidelines:

  • Your original monologue or song should be submitted as a video performance of the piece.

  • Video length should not exceed 5 minutes.

  • Video submissions should include an intro with your name, where you’re from (optional), title of your piece (optional), and a fun fact or additional info about you (optional).

  • Your song or monologue should be between 2 and 4 minutes in length.

  • Songs and monologues must adhere to the theme given on April 24th.

  • Songs and monologues must include the phrase/line given on April 24th.

  • All content must be appropriate for all ages. Keep in mind, that doesn’t mean difficult topics can’t be explored, it just means to keep it clean. If in doubt, edit or ask us via Remind, social media message, or at monologuesonginaday@gmail.com. We will get back to you as soon as possible!

  • All songs and monologues must be entirely original work written within the 24-hour period between 6 p.m. CST April 24th and 6 p.m. CST April 25th.

  • You are only allowed to participate in one submission.

Tips and FAQ:

We’ll keep adding to this LIVE document as questions and info arises, so check back for more!

  • The idea is this is a theatrical character monologue or song! All genres welcome but have fun with a character of your own creation!

  • You already procrastinate on everything… so don’t worry if you don’t get this done until the last minute.

  • We won’t/can’t know if you are improvising, so yes, feel free to improvise.

  • We encourage costumes, props, makeup, … which can really make your fully theatrical character and video stand out, but they are not required.

  • Garageband is a free app on apple devices that can be used to create music tracks even if you know NOTHING about writing music, but especially if you do! Tons of easy to follow videos can be found online.

  • Audiotool.com is a great resource, especially for simple beat patterns.

  • Yes, your song can be a capella if you choose.

  • Songs do not have to be “musical theatre style” and can be any genre but will be judged as songs for the theatre.

  • No, you do not have to write a song AND a monologue, just one or the other unless you're feeling super into this, then you can write both, but still keep it to one video entry and the total time combined at 2-4 minutes long.

  • No, there is not a rule about working alone on this. Yes, you may collaborate, but each person can only participate in one submission.

  • Get your friends, siblings, parents, and others to do this event too! Separate or together!

  • Have fun!
